Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
